Course Overview

The objective of this training course is to familiarize all employees with the theory and history of W.H.M.I.S., ensuring they understand hazardous chemical classifications, labeling requirements, safety procedures, and emergency responses to promote a safe and compliant workplace.


1. Introduction to W.H.M.I.S. (15 minutes) 

  • History and purpose of W.H.M.I.S.
  • Importance of proper chemical management and safety

2. Hazardous Chemical Classifications (30 minutes) 

  • Types of hazardous chemicals
  • Recognizing different classifications and their implications

3. M.S.D.S. Labels (20 minutes) 

  • Understanding Material Safety Data Sheets (M.S.D.S.)
  • Interpreting labels and symbols
  • How to access and utilize M.S.D.S. during daily operations

4. Employee Responsibilities (15 minutes) 

  • Proper handling and storage
  • Reporting hazards and incidents
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements

5. Safe Handling and Storage of Chemicals (20 minutes) 

  • Best practices for chemical handling
  • Storage guidelines to prevent accidents
  • Segregation of incompatible chemicals

6. Standard Emergency Procedures (20 minutes) 

  • Spill response
  • Evacuation procedures
  • Emergency contacts and reporting

7. How Chemicals Enter the Body & Avoiding Health Hazards (20 minutes) 

  • Routes of exposure (inhalation, skin contact, ingestion)
  • Preventative measures and PPE use
  • Recognizing early symptoms of exposure

8. Fire, Explosions, and Chemical Reactions (20 minutes) 

  • Recognizing fire and explosion hazards
  • Safe reaction practices
  • Use of fire extinguishers and suppression systems

Duration: approximately 2.5 to 3 hours
